To me, design means observing the world with curiosity, thinking creatively, and being open for experminets. This process allows ideas to emerge that are both surprising and inspiring.

Plastonite

A material that tells stories.

Plastonite is a new material we developed using recycled plastic waste and the eco-friendly acrylic resin Jesmonite. This combination creates a material that opens up new design possibilities through its versatility.

We started with the theme "Habits," which inspired us to take a closer look at our daily routines. During our research and visits to various recycling facilities in Germany, we quickly realized that the recycling system often doesn’t function as well as it appears on the surface. To think beyond the obvious, we reached out to organizations actively combating global marine pollution caused by non-recycled plastic waste. This led us to collaborate with *One Earth – One Ocean*, who provided us with unprocessed plastic waste they had collected.

Initially inspired by terrazzo production, we developed a method to shred the plastic and process it into a base material. After numerous experiments, we created a material that not only features a unique aesthetic but also stands out for its structure and eco-friendliness. We analyzed its properties and found it to be durable, waterproof, and highly versatile, paving the way for exciting product development opportunities.

Our goal is to create something from this material that adds real value to everyday life while promoting a responsible approach to resource use – a process that extends far beyond our studies.
